How to sign "word" in ASL
How to Sign "Word"
“Word” is signed by tapping the index finger of your dominant hand to the tip of your non-dominant index finger (which points upward):
- Hold your non-dominant hand in an upright “1” shape (index pointing up).
- Form a small “O” or index-finger shape with your dominant hand.
- Tap the dominant finger to the tip of the upright index — like placing a dot on an “i.”
Tips
- Think of a single point of language or a small unit of meaning.
- Keep the motion small and accurate — not exaggerated.
Common Mistakes
- Tapping too forcefully — it should be a soft touch.
- Incorrect hand orientation — fingers should be vertical and meet at the tips.
Think: “A word — a point on the line of language.”
