How to sign "where" in ASL

How to Sign "Where"

“Where” is signed by wagging your index finger side to side, as if you're asking a question:

  • Hold up your dominant hand in front of you with just the index finger extended (like you're pointing up).
  • Move the finger side to side gently a couple of times — like a small “no-no” motion.
  • Keep your facial expression inquisitive — raised eyebrows help signal a question.

Tips

  • Your facial expression matters — show that you’re asking a question.
  • Think of a teacher gently wagging a finger while asking, “Where do you think it is?”

Common Mistakes

  • Moving the whole hand instead of just the finger — keep the hand steady.
  • Making the motion too big or aggressive — keep it small and relaxed.

Think: “Where did it go?” with curiosity in your eyes!
