How to sign "s" in ASL

How to Sign the Letter "S"

The ASL letter “S” is signed by making a fist with your dominant hand:

  • Curl all four fingers tightly into your palm.
  • Place your thumb across the front of your fingers (not inside the fist).
  • Keep your hand steady, palm facing slightly forward or to the side.

It looks just like making a strong fist — but with the thumb outside.

Tips for Signing "S"

  • Keep your thumb outside the fist — not tucked in!
  • Don’t clench too tightly — keep it relaxed and visible.
  • Practice spelling simple words like “sun” or “stop.”

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Thumb tucked inside — this changes the meaning.
  • Hand too low or hidden — make it visible to the viewer.
  • Confusing it with the letter “A” (which also forms a fist).

“S” and “A” are similar — the thumb position makes all the difference!
