How to sign "s" in ASL
How to Sign the Letter "S"
The ASL letter “S” is signed by making a fist with your dominant hand:
- Curl all four fingers tightly into your palm.
- Place your thumb across the front of your fingers (not inside the fist).
- Keep your hand steady, palm facing slightly forward or to the side.
It looks just like making a strong fist — but with the thumb outside.

Tips for Signing "S"
- Keep your thumb outside the fist — not tucked in!
- Don’t clench too tightly — keep it relaxed and visible.
- Practice spelling simple words like “sun” or “stop.”
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Thumb tucked inside — this changes the meaning.
- Hand too low or hidden — make it visible to the viewer.
- Confusing it with the letter “A” (which also forms a fist).
“S” and “A” are similar — the thumb position makes all the difference!
