How to sign "not" in ASL
How to Sign "Not"
“Not” is signed by brushing your thumb off your chin in a quick motion:
- Form a flat hand with thumb extended.
- Place the tip of your thumb against your chin.
- Flick the hand outward and slightly down in a short motion.
Tips
- Think of saying “not” with a dismissive gesture—thumb flick equals refusal.
- Keep motion short and sharp.
Common Mistakes
- Using flat palm instead of thumb flick—meaning may change.
- Touching lips or forehead—must be chin only.
Think: “Thumb says ‘no’ and flicks away.”
