How to sign "not" in ASL

How to Sign "Not"

“Not” is signed by brushing your thumb off your chin in a quick motion:

  • Form a flat hand with thumb extended.
  • Place the tip of your thumb against your chin.
  • Flick the hand outward and slightly down in a short motion.

Tips

  • Think of saying “not” with a dismissive gesture—thumb flick equals refusal.
  • Keep motion short and sharp.

Common Mistakes

  • Using flat palm instead of thumb flick—meaning may change.
  • Touching lips or forehead—must be chin only.

Think: “Thumb says ‘no’ and flicks away.”
