How to sign "new" in ASL
How to Sign "New"
“New” is signed by using your non‑dominant flat palm and your dominant hand brushing upward in a scoop-like motion:
- Extend your non‑dominant arm with palm up, holding it flat.
- Form your dominant hand into a flat-O or “C” shape.
- Brush the dominant hand across the non-dominant palm, then lift upward and outward.
Tips
- Picture scooping something fresh off the hand—then it rises.
- Keep motion smooth—don’t drag across too long.
Common Mistakes
- Skipping the upward lift—just brushing the palm without the rise.
- Wrong handshape—ensure it's flat-O or curved “C.”
Think: “Fresh scoop, lift to show it’s new.”
