How to sign "late" in ASL

How to Sign "Late"

“Late” is signed by brushing one hand down the wrist of the other:

  • Hold your non-dominant arm extended across your body, palm down, as if showing a wrist.
  • Use your dominant hand (open, palm facing down) to brush downward on the back of the non-dominant wrist.

Tips

  • Think of checking the time—a downward swipe signals “too late.”
  • Keep the motion smooth and clear.

Common Mistakes

  • Brushing upward or sideways—must be downward motion.
  • Missing the wrist component—only brushing the hand won’t convey “late.”

Think: “Time has passed—down the wrist.”
