How to sign "dad" in ASL
How to Sign "Dad"
“Dad” is signed by spreading your fingers and tapping your thumb to your forehead:
- Form a “5” handshape (fingers spread, palm facing sideways).
- Touch the tip of your thumb to your forehead (just above the eyebrow).
- Tap once or twice gently.
Tips
- Male family signs are made near the forehead, female near the chin.
- This same handshape is used for “grandfather” with two movements outward.
Common Mistakes
- Touching the chin — that’s for “mom.”
- Using closed fingers — the hand must be open like a “5.”
Think: “Open hand at forehead = Dad.”
