How to sign "can" in ASL
How to Sign "Can"
“Can” is signed by using two “S” handshapes and moving them downward together:
- Form a fist with each hand (the “S” shape).
- Hold both at chest height, palms facing toward your body.
- Press them downward slightly at the same time.
Tips
- Directional movement matters: downward push suggests ability (I can).
- If moving upward instead (pushing up), it means “able to.”
Common Mistakes
- Using open hands or thumbs — must be fists.
- Only moving one hand — both move together.
Think: “Fists go down — you can do it.”
