How to sign "aunt" in ASL

How to Sign "Aunt"

“Aunt” is signed by shaking the letter “A” near the side of your cheek:

  • Form an “A” handshape with your dominant hand (fist with thumb on the side).
  • Hold it near the side of your cheek (jawline area).
  • Give it a small shake or twist in place.

Tips

  • Signs for female relatives typically happen near the jaw or chin.
  • Keep the movement light and subtle — no wide motion.

Common Mistakes

  • Signing too close to the ear or too low — it should be at the jawline.
  • Forgetting to shake — otherwise it looks like the letter “A” only.

Think: “A for Aunt — by the jaw.”
